Posts: 2686 01/30/09 09:42	Tags : None Another topic of discussion: Without going to the taxpayer, should an organization try to raise money for a new gymnasium before we build the new school? I've attended games in most of NW Ohio's gyms and Fremont's is one of the smallest now (even Lakota will be getting a new one). Personally, I think it would be nice to have another 250 seats on each side, but at the same time, we rarely fill the gym (visitors side usually has seating) and the stage does (though most adults wouldn't want to be up there). Also, it's nice when it looks "full" as compared to some of these gyms that are virtually empty.

Posts: 6051 01/30/09 01:05	The Purple Pit needs replaced or renovated for sure but considering the outstanding amount of money remaining to pay off the existing facilities I think we should wait. Ross doesn't need a huge new facility but one somewhat bigger would be nice. Maybe around 2,000-2,400 seats. In this economy and considering the fact that Fremonters just approved $18,000,000 in new taxes for a middle school I personally don't believe the time is right for this type of project. Unless Bill Gates or Warren Buffet decides to donate the money for it. Keith

Posts: 2687 01/30/09 02:38	Good point Keith. I wonder how much it would cost for them to put in a good ventilation system or knock out a window on each side and put in windows that could be opened to circulate air into the gym.

Posts: 1172 01/30/09 04:17 Local user	Yes we need a new gym badly. It is without doubt the laughing stock of NW Ohio. True that visiting fans don't pack it out, but in their defense, the Purple Pit goes not without reputation of being rinky dink. Would you wanna risk driving from wherever you come from only to find out you can't get in the place. Us hometown folk know it rarely packs out, but they just know the bad rep. The football stadium suffered a bad reputation for the longest time but it's finally broken free of it. But like Keith said, I'm not so sure now is the time and place to be asking for even more money from the taxpayer. If I'm not mistaken, we have funds set up for a new gym via the Fremont Foundation- the proper name slips me.

In any of these projects, you need a main donor to give the main gift or pledge and that person/business/organzation is missing so far. I think the cost could be much lower than the pool or stadium due to the type of construction, but without the key donor it is not going to move forward. It would be nice to have a new one, but I don't see it for a while. We are not only looking at a long tax levy for the middle school, but there is another 40-50 million that will come before the public in the next few years for the renovation of the high school and replacement of elemenataries. The tax payer is going to get hit up again in the near future for those renovations/replacements.

Fremont voters who are very frugal(not being critical...just honest)with their tax dollars when it comes to the school system, were very supportive of the district in the toughest economic times in most of our lifetimes. I have already heard discussions among family and friends that "they're going to be coming back for more" in the not too distant future. While I personally believe the superintendant and board of education have done a tremendous job, asking for more tax dollars is going to be a tough task. That must come into consideration when it comes to improvements for sports facilities. Frankly, other than basketball, Fremont has some of the very best facilities in Northern Ohio. On a side note...with the facilities Fremont has, the folks in the NOL would be nuts to pass Ross up should we be in the running for membership. Keith
