Potential league change discussion thread |

The article in todays N-M about the SLL growing to a 12 team, two division league also mentions that the GBC officials met in Findlay this week and are sending
a letter to the Western Buckeye League to explore a possible merger. While that is good for Lima, Marion and Findlay, it absolutely stinks for Fremont Ross,
who once again would get screwed. Thoughts?

Bad geography certainly. Who is in the Western Buckeye and what size schools are they I can't imagine that Findlay as one of the biggest populaiton schools
in the state would fit in very well. But at this point and the way the economy is, dollars may dictate.

The WBL is a hell of a league.
Kenton St Marys Memorial Lima Bath Lima Shawnee Defiance Wapakaneta Elida Ottawa Glandorf Celina Van Wert Teams there have won several State Championships in Football. This would be a travel nightmare for Fremont. http://www.wblsports.com/wblfootball.html

Since I have a little more space here, I want to clarify something GBC commissioner Nate Lynch told me. He said he is going to send a letter of interest to the
WBL about possibly merging. However, he envisions if any merger would happen, it would have to include two divisions based on geography because of the distance
of the WBL.

Very good article Jeff! When I first read about a GBC/WBL merger I thought "are you nuts". I don't see Fremont getting into a league where
we'd have even more travel than what we do now. But more importantly, I think the WBL is going to laugh at our letter and file it in the circular. The WBL
is a very good league. They have been pretty stable for who knows how long. Plus their members are a lot smaller than what the GBC has.
I'm with Kyle I plead and plead to the NLL/NOL to let us in. I have some strong mixed feelings about the NOL though. Like Keith says, if we weren't good enough for them when they sent out 12-15 letters of interest, then why should we help save your league now when you are behind the 8-ball? The NLL is the best fit for Fremont but they don't wanna expand. And until that day ever happens I strongly feel that Fremont is always going to be travelling long distances no matter what league they're in. |

I'm glad to see/read that the folks in charge of the GBC are at least publically appearing to finally be taking some kind of action. Now granted, I have no
clue what kind of action is being done behind closed doors or privately, if any. But with the waves of league change info hitting us almost daily action must
be taken or I really believe that those who don't act proactively will be left behind. Now I agree that the WBL will just ignore the letter from the GBC.
About the only GBC school that would fit in the WBL is Napoleon and the Wildcats have their eye on the NLL. Findlay is too big, in all honesty, Lima is too
black and Marion and Fremont are too big and too far away for the WBL. What absolutely bugs me is the way Fremont Ross is being treated. We are a school with a
tremendous athletic tradition, awesome facilities, a huge fan base and would provide great competition. We should be at the top of any list when it comes to
conference consideration...and we are not. It's a slap in the face frankly. One day very soon as the NOL continues to crumble they are going to come
calling...begging really and I think we should treat them the same way they have treated us.

Interesting developments. I had to go to Van Wert today and came back through Ottawa. 2hrs to VW with my heavy foot and a good 1 1/2 to Ottawa. Celina and St.
Mary is a further drive. Pretty tough geography to interest those schools in Fremont IMO.
As much as I have been against the idea, the NOL and NLL look a lot better. Costs of competition are going to kill us, especially when you look at a conf set of games in minor sports, winter sports, etc. Very tough set of options. |

We should not have to kiss but, instead we should get with Findlay and go to Toledo and influence Central, St. Johns, St. Francis and Whitmer that they need us as much as we need them. Honestly I think the SLL merger is going to change the game for everybody. |

Just for discussion sake here are a few questions:
Considering other threads about winning, good programs -vs- winning, and importance of making the playoffs, how much consideration should be given to these for a league change? Considering the complaints about playing schools like Lorain, to some extent Perrysburg a couple years ago, and not getting points what will happen if the league would be made up predominately DII schools? If we don't get into the playoffs due to this what is everyone going to say? Travel is being considered by all here and that is good. How would we fare in the sports other than football and basketball? Specifically golf, soccer, volleyball, tennis, and possibly softball and baseball. How much consideration should this be given? |

LGS,
Good questions: Honestly, I think that playing in a league like the NLL would keep us on our heals with other programs our size if we'd drop to Division II. I say that with a little caution as I still think it would be wise to have our 3 non-league games be against teams like Toledo Whitmer, Findlay (if they are no longer in the conference), and a solid DI school. Considering how we fare in any sport other than football and boys' basketball is most likely not as much of a concern as others as a lot of these sports aren't viewed as "important" by the community. (note, I didn't say myself). |

Gotta keep Sandusky on the schedule. You don't want to wreck one of the longest rivalries.
The question of other sports is that if you are in a league, you have to play the games. In the WB the travel costs would kill Fremont for all these sports and raise objections from the other schools for the same reason. I know that the coaches are doing the best they can to save money. In swimming frequently Coach would send the bus home after the kids were dropped off and make certain the parents took the kids home to save money. Perkins frequently drops off the kids at Fremont and comes back when the meet is over--i.e. the day long or tourny meets. You have to remember if you offer sports, you have to offer competition to all the teams and a corresponding budget. I think it would be wrong to start eliminating sports and opportunities for kids, especially those who may be college bound. You also have to remember the opportunities for the girls. You can't just have a football and basketball team!! Because of the financial reasons, probably the NOL or NLL makes the most sense if they would want us of the GBC falls apart. LGS knows more of the other aspects the system must look at other than the items us posters raise, so his comments are extremely valuable to think about. Just today a young man--Josh McAfee-- signed to play d-3 soccer at Tiffin University. Congats to him, his family and coaches. Another Ross athlete moving on in a "minor" sport to play and get an education.

GBC-WBL Merger | #19 | ||

I'm glad somebody else mentioned this Toledo City League idea, because I did not want to be the one to come out with it. I've had that on my mind but couldn't bring myself to actually say it. This has got to be the Worst Case Scenario, but I'm afraid a very real possibility. If the GBC does disband with Napoleon or Sandusky leaving, and nobody to take their place, we are screwed. I do not understand the attitude towards Fremont Ross from the other leagues. Would we get more home games if we played the city league schools ? The only thing I would be in favor of is the idea regarding the parochial schools, Whitmer, Ross, Findlay, and Sandusky if they were available. That might work, but I still don't know. I just hope something pans out, or the GBC can stay intact. |
